Congratulations to both Juan E. Gilbert, Ph.D., and David Kaber, Ph.D., who have been named Fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). IEEE Fellow is a major distinction reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of this elevation.  The Fellow designation is the most prestigious rank IEEE offers, following a rigorous evaluation procedure, with less than 0.1% of voting members selected for the honor.

Department Chair Dr. Gilbert was elevated for “leadership in broadening participation in computing and contributions to accessible voting technologies.” His research is in human-centered computing (HCC) and artificial intelligence (AI). His research integrates people, technology, information, policy, and culture  to address societal issues. Dr. Gilbert’s areas of specialization within HCC and AI are natural interactive systems, bias in AI, advanced learning technologies/intelligent tutoring systems, ethnocomputing/culturally aware computing and information technology workforce, human-computer interaction, databases and data mining.
