SiLDA Lab Advances SoC Security with Innovative LLM Technology

In a continued push for greater hardware security, FICS Associate Director and Wally Rhines Endowed Professor in Hardware Security Dr. Farimah Farahmandi and her team in the SiLDA Lab are transforming System-on-Chip (SoC) security by integrating Large Language Models (LLMs) into their research. Their aim to address the rising threats associated with complex SoC and to ensure that new vulnerabilities are identified and mitigated effectively.  Doctoral students Dipayan Saha and Shams Tarek working with Dr. Farahmandi examine how LLMs are reshaping the field of hardware security by introducing automation, scalability, and adaptability. Case studies and experimental results demonstrate how LLMs significantly enhance both accuracy and efficiency in critical security tasks such as vulnerability and threat (hardware Trojan) detection, vulnerability insertion, and countermeasure development. A key aspect of their recent work is the creation of an extensive security-aware dataset that includes a large collection of vulnerable RTL designs. Traditionally, amassing such data is time-consuming, yet the lab has leveraged LLM-driven techniques to automate and expedite the process. The team not only injected bugs in the designs but also validated the bug injection through formal tools and in-house static tools. These datasets and benchmarks will help the community to build up newer AI-based hardware security frameworks and estimate the performance.
