FICS Research held its second annual Conference on Cybersecurity this week at the University of Florida’s Emerson Alumni Hall. More than 200 experts from industry, academe and government gathered to share and discuss the latest research and findings related to cybersecurity and assurance.
This year’s theme “IoT Security” filled the conference agenda with topics related to the Internet of Things, a term that describes the exploding number of sensor-based, wireless devices that are increasingly becoming available, like wearables, automated vehicle features, and home monitoring units. Discussions took place around efforts to organize protocols and standards in the healthcare, automotive, financial and energy industries, where the security and safety of IoT solutions are most critical to users.
“The conference brought together experts from around the country to share new ideas on dealing with emerging cyber-security issues,” said Mark Tehranipoor, the Intel Charles E. Young Preeminence Endowed Chair Professor in Cybersecurity, co-director of FICS Research, and organizer of the annual conference. “It also allowed our faculty and students to showcase their recent discoveries with those from industry and government.”
More than 21 panels and presentations were held over two days, as well as a student poster session and demonstration competition. An awards ceremony coincided with International Women’s Day and recognized outstanding students in the field of cybersecurity, including Sreeja Chowdhury and Tempestt Neal, who were awarded scholarships to attend the Grace Hopper Conference later this year with professors Daniela Oliveira and Tuba Yavuz, faculty in the UF Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering.
